Hey, Mamas!
My name is Beri Gebrehiwot and I am a wife, mom, a Registered Nurse, an Author, Speaker and Entrepreneur. I love creating, gathering and connecting with amazing women as well as connecting them with others. I never knew this was a “thing,” but I discovered early in my adulthood that I really love bringing people together in meaningful ways to foster connections and community.
As a natural “mama-bear” and nurse, I love helping others, especially women, and watching them grow to their fullest potential. Furthermore, I am passionate about my cultural heritage and preserving it for generations to come.
In 2014, I was in a new season of Married life & Mommy life. I was lucky to be spoiled by hubby the first 6 months of our son's arrival, as he stayed home and learned how to be a first-time parent with me (best time of our lives, btw!). But, after he returned to work, it was just me and baby... and I had no idea how to connect with other moms that I would have some things in common with. The loneliness kicked in and at the same time, the responsibilities of Motherhood began to ramp up as baby grew and demanded more.
So, in response to my isolation as a new mom, I created Habesha Moms as a private Facebook group in 2014 with hopes of connecting with like-minded moms. I wasn't sure what to expect, but:
I knew I wanted to connect with other moms who shared a similar culture & heritage
I wanted to raise my son around people who shared our values and culture
I wanted to feel at “home” when discussing all of the new cultural and traditional expectations and rituals while pregnant and after baby
I wanted to share what I was experiencing with moms I had a connection with
I wanted to know how other moms who looked like me were helping to preserve their cultural heritage with their little ones
I wanted access to easy traditional food recipes that I could learn to make for my family.
Long story short, not only did this group grow to be a beautiful community of over 15,000 women globally, but it quickly became:
a safe space for genuine, raw conversations.
a place where self-care for the cultural mom became a “thing.”
a space for personal growth + development.
a space that felt like home.
an online group that became offline Mommy Meet-ups.
a place for around the clock parental advice +support.
a place where mental health and postpartum depression was openly discussed, along with other taboo topics that were not talked about.
a place for finding resources in the community.
a place for finding culturally relevant resources for our kids.
a place where women genuinely supported and empowered one another.
a community of moms who gave to charities and community organizations.
Almaz + co. is an extension of this Facebook community, and I hope women will use this platform to connect with other Moms in their communities and love on one another! I found some of the most amazing women on this platform, whom I'm so blessed to call sisters today (yay!).
I’m telling you— It's an amazing thing to have women in the same season to do Life with you! ️I love my village and don’t know where I’d be without them.
Everyone needs a village- and it’s mandatory when you become a mother! Join a Meet-up Group in your city and let’s do this thing called Motherhood together!
P.S. Do you love listening to stories about other women, their journey in Motherhood, Marriage, Business and Personal Development…? If that’s a YES, then you’ll have to check out our Podcast episodes!
Cheers to growing as a community and doing Motherhood with your new sisters!! (cue the confetti…!!!)
